The video for Nemuri’s latest track was shot in Los Angeles and directed online from Tokyo.
Haru Nemuri has released her first single of 2021. “bang”, released on TO3S Records, was recorded at HappyCat Recordings in Tokyo. It follows Haru to Shura, Nemuri’s 2018 breakout record and Lovetheism, her 2020 mini-album. It is her first release since last year’s Bandcamp-exclusive demo track “Heart of Gold”.
The music video, shot in Los Angeles during the pandemic but directed by Nemuri and her team in Tokyo, includes projections of Nemuri on the streets of Hollywood and downtown LA.
The song itself features Nemuri’s typical bursts of distortion among elements of noise pop, alt-rock, pop punk and hip hop. Nemuri raps of defiance and hope in the face of violence and poverty, tumbling through maxims towards the intense and dramatic “bangs” of the chorus.
In a statement, Nemuri says of “bang”:
“To put it briefly, it’s ‘prayer’... During our life, we might have painful experiences that we wouldn't be able to forget. Though in this world we are losing the subjects to which we should pray because something like the religion, race, gender and blood relation doesn’t decide our identity at all in the present times, I’m now finding hope in ‘prayer’ itself.”
